You thought EekFun and Chr97 were enough? Think again: I hereby launch yet another project, i7on:
I'm a little bit dissatisfied with the lack of truly free icons available that can be reused for any purpose. Most collections of icons I've found are only available under restrictive licenses or they tend to be relatively small or they are not free. I created i7on to try to change that. The idea is that users create icons through an easy to use JavaScript interface and, as they do so, they contribute to a big collection of icons that anyone can reuse for any purpose.
Each icon has an optional author and tags. I plan to also:
- Host a discussion for each icon
- Add rating/scoring functionality.
- Add more features for downloading icons in any given color and burned onto sexy AJAX-y buttons.
I think users will create icons in i7on for different reasons. For some users, allowing others to reuse the icons they create (so others won't have to waste their time recreating similar icons) will be a powerful incentive. I expect others will be drawn to the idea of showing the cool icons they create. Finally, I think people will just go to i7on to create icons because it is fun to do so.
I require contributors to waive their rights to their icons through the use of CC0.
I decided to limit the system to icons of 16 by 16 pixels and only 2 colors for simplicity. While this greatly limits the usefulness of the icons, I think it's a good compromise to keep the act of creating icons simple. I think if we supported a larger set of colors or larger icons, the complexity of creating good icons would increase to the point where the number of contributions would drop significantly. Note that with our current constraints the possible number of icons is 2^256. We can always relax these restrictions in the future.
Now go ahead and create some icons!
